Welcome

Welcome everyone, and thank you for coming here today to celebrate the naming of Elwyn. Katy, Kirk and Arthur have invited you here today to take part in this ceremony, which formally acknowledges Elwyn’s place in the world. They have chosen not to have a religious ceremony at this point, as they would like Elwyn to be able to explore and make his own choices about what he believes in when he is older. For those of us who believe in a god, most will recognise that God is part of our lives and is an ever present reality whether we acknowledge him or not, therefore for myself and some others God is present and we ask His blessing on Elwyn too.

You are all here today to share in the welcoming of Elwyn in to this world, and in to his family. This is also a time for Kirk, Katy, and Arthur, together with Elwyn’s guide parents; Lisa, Belinda, Laura, and Jamie to publicly acknowledge and declare their responsibilities and commitments to Elwyn. Sadly, Lisa could not be present today as she is sunning it up in Cyprus.

Elwyn was born on the 20th of September 2017 at the Great Western Hospital. He came with quite a rush and has been warmly welcomed in to his family, bringing much happiness and joy, along with some challenges as they have learned to work together as a unit of 4. Athur has learned to accept that Elwyn is very much here to stay, and the bond between them has grown to be very special. Katy and Kirk chose the name Elwyn because they wanted their second baby to have an uncommon name, unique to him, and they liked the various meanings of it, “friend of elves”, “bright”. “wise friend”’. Elwyn’s middle names reflect old family names; Inigo from Katy’s side and Fraser from Kirk’s. Elwyn is affectionately known as “Snufflepigs”, or any shortened version thereof. This is a nickname that Kirk came up with in the early days when Elwyn was a very snuffly baby, Katy hated it at first but Kirk and Arthur loved it and it has stuck! Arthur is keen to tell everyone that his baby’s name is Snuffles!

Elwyn’s personality shines through, he is generally a laid back, cheerful little soul who throws himself into things with great gusto and determination. He loves to see a familiar face, novel toys and new situations. He already has his Mama’s nerves on edge by the way he launches himself around with no fear!

Family
(read by Wendy)

A family is a place to cry, laugh, and vent frustrations,
To ask for help, tease and yell,
To be touched and hugged and smiled at.

A family is people who care when you are sad,
Who love you no matter what and share your triumphs.
Who don’t expect you to be perfect,
Just growing with honesty, in your own direction.

Family is a circle,
Where we learn to like ourselves,
Where we learn to make good decisions, and think before we do.
Where we learn integrity and table manners,
And respect for other people.
Where we are special, and share ideas.
Where we listen and are listened to.
Where we learn the rules of life,
To prepare ourselves for the world.

The world is a place where anything can happen,
If we grow up in a loving family, we are ready for the world.

And then there were four

Parent’s Vows

Before we go on to the vows Katy and Kirk are going to make as parents, Katy has a poem she wishes to read:

A mother’s wish by Anon
I hope my child looks back on today
And sees a mother who had time to play
There will be years for cleaning and cooking
But children grow up when you are not looking
Tomorrow I’ll do all the chores you mention
But today my baby needs time and attention
So settle down cobwebs; dust go to sleep
I’m cuddling my baby and babies don’t keep

Katy and Kirk, I am now going to ask you to make promises as parents in front of your family and friends, who can then support you to keep them.

Will you surround Elwyn with love, affection, and patience and make as sure as you can that no harm comes to him? Will you treat him gently and with respect so that he can learn to respect others?

Katy and Kirk: We will.

Will you work together as parents to provide a calm, stable family life, full of wonder, fun and laughter?

Katy and Kirk: We will!

Will you always be there for Elwyn throughout his lifetime whenever he may need you, and will you be realistic in your hopes for him and accept the choices he makes as he grows up?

Katy and Kirk: We will.

Guideparent Vows

The bond between parents and their children is very strong, but the support and encouragement of others is vital for the development of the child. Katy and Kirk recognise that Elwyn has been born in to an extended family who will be there for him as he grows up, and they know that both sets of grandparents, Aunties and cousins will have their roles to play. In order to widen Elwyn’s network of support, they have chosen four people who they think will provide something additional to Elwyn’s life.

They have chosen these people for specific reasons: Lisa, for her kindness, and always being ready to help; Belinda, for who is always there, doing her best for those she loves; Laura, for her calm, steady knowledgeable ways and for fun play dates; , and Jamie, for his creativity and wisdom. Children need to have role models who are not their parents, and guide parents should be willing to take a special and lifelong long interest in the moral, ethical and spiritual development of the child.

Can the guide parents please step forward.

Will you promise to support Elwyn in all that he does, to inspire his imagination and help him fulfil his dreams?

Guideparents: We will.

Do you promise to be an ear to listen, a voice to advise and a pair of arms that will always have a hug waiting when its needed?

Guideparents: We will.

Do you promise to be there for Elwyn throughout his life, having fun times with him and supporting him through tricky times, with a kindly word, or a challenging discussion, prompting and supporting him to take the right path in life for him?

Guideparents: We will.

Aunty Lisa, who could not be present, has asked for this to be read on her behalf.

Elwyn may you always have
A sunbeam to warm you
Good luck to charm you
And a sheltering Angel
So nothing can harm you
Laughter to cheer you
Faithful friends near you
And whenever you pray
Heaven to hear you.

Before we move on to the formal naming, we would like you to join in with this song that Kirk created off the top of his head in the very early days (when the lyrics were an accurate reflection of what Elwyn did). Arthur learnt it very quickly, and it is now one of Elwyn’s favourite songs.

Snufflepigs
(To the tune of Edelweiss, sing through twice.)

Snufflepigs, Snufflepigs,

you like to snort and snuffle.

Snufflepigs, Snufflepigs,

your breathing is such a kerfuffle.

You snort and sniff and burp and fart,

And sickies every day.

Snufflepigs, Snufflepigs,

we’re glad you’re here to stay.

Endings and Naming

Having welcomed Elwyn into this world, and heard commitments from his parents and guideparents, it brings us to the final and very important part of this ceremony, the naming of Elwyn.

As we formally name Elwyn, we mark his individuality as a person and recognise his place amongst his family and friends. So, in the presence of you all, I am very pleased to give you the name Elwyn Inigo Fraser Anderson.

May your life be long, fulfilled and happy in every way.

May the Lord bless you and take care of you;
May the Lord be kind and gracious to you;
May the Lord look on you with favour and give you peace.

We are going to finish with a traditional Irish blessing, chosen by Elwyn’s Aunty Clare, who could not be here today, read by Auntie Kirstine.

May you always have walls for the winds,
A roof for the rain, tea beside the fire,
Laughter to cheer you, those you love near you,
And all your heat might desire.

May the sun shine all day long,
Everything go right, and nothing wrong,
May those you love bring love back to you,
And may all the wishes you wish come true.

May luck be your friend,
In whatever you do,
And may trouble be always,
A stranger to you.
